Sweepstakes Judge: Sandra French, Bherov Borzoi, Bittern Lake, Alberta
Sandra French's first purebred dogs in England were English Cockers and although they were from the beautiful Lochranza lines she enjoyed them as pets. On a trip to the South of England as a child she had seen some gorgeous red and white Borzoi that left a lasting impression on her. It wasn’t long after emigrating to Canada that she started to visit dog shows and was introduced to breeders of the Russian Wolfhound.
Her first Borzoi puppy was ‘Boris’ (what other name fit so well)? He was officially Kishniga’s Dionysius the Elder, a lovely white and silver brother to ‘Moustache’ and ‘Dalgarth’. She met wonderful people through the great introduction to “The Ring’ by Doctors Richard Meen and John Reeve-Newson and quickly got her first Champion. She llater bought a lovely red and white bitch from Lloyd and Barbara Allewell's Laba Kennel, Laba’s Cinnamon, who was later bred to an English Import, Wellthornes Hussar, who she bought from Anne Thornwell and Sheila Woollands of Yadasar Kennel in England where she had returned and spent a year, being lucky enough to travel to shows with Ann and visit some very famous kennels.
Later travels to Holland and Sweden and an invitation to judge the Swedish Borzoi Club Show gave her great appreciation for many different bloodlines. She was breeding under the prefix Bherov and has exported dogs to Switzerland, Sweden and USA. She retired from breeding Borzoi ten years ago and even though she is now breeding Whippets under the Manorcourt prefix she always likes to follow the progress of the Borzoi by stopping ringside to chat to friends old and new and see some wonderful dogs.

Animals were always a very important part of my life as a child; I grew up surrounded by horses, dogs and cats and I loved every moment! I was 11 when I saw a picture of a Borzoi for the first time and it was love at first sight! I just knew that this was to be my breed and would be the centre of my life. In late 1976, I acquired my first Borzoi and shortly thereafter, Jantar Borzoi was established. My kennel name was given permanent status by the Canadian Kennel Club in 1988. Through the years, there have been many significant winning Borzoi produced by either Jantar owned or bred Borzoi including multi BIS, BISS, BIF, and HIT winners and Top Producers. More importantly, my Borzoi are first and foremost, my beloved companions and they fill my life with magic!
I began my judging career in the early 1990s and have been honoured to be invited to judge a number of Borzoi and Sighthound Specialties in both Canada and the US. An assignment that will forever remain of particular significance for me was judging the 1990 Borzoi Club of America Futurity.
Thank you for the honour and privilege of judging the 2014 Borzoi Canada National. I wish all of the exhibitors a day of great memories with your beloved Borzoi.
