The Borzoi is a member of the Sighthound family of hounds and is so named because it hunts more by sight than scent. This combined with its amazing hunting ability make these the fundamental instinctual breed characteristics of the Borzoi.
The Borzoi is considered a giant breed with an average height at the withers (top of the shoulders) of 28 to 32 inches and an average weight of 60 to 100 pounds. The males are generally larger than the females and carry a longer and more profuse coat. This is an aesthetically beautiful breed and very elegant and graceful whether running or reclining. An identifying physical characteristic of the breed is the topline which is a graceful curve over the loin. This allows the Borzoi a flexibility in its back essential in the double-suspension gallop. It is because of this that the Borzoi along with a number of other hounds, is capable of great speed and agility while coursing.
The Borzoi is also a very efficient hunter and has incredibly quick instincts and reflexes. A good and stable temperament is absolutely essential in this breed and reputable breeders strive to maintain the gentle, affectionate and loyal temperament that defines soundness of mind in the Borzoi.
This is an intelligent breed but it is important to understand the nature and psyche of the Borzoi in choosing to live your life with one. The Borzoi was bred for its ability to be the hunter and work as a team in the hunt. So by definition, this is an independent thinker. When training a Borzoi, it is a must to keep this fact in mind and train him to work with you and not for you.
